A shoe is judged on the surface. Everything that decides whether it is any good happens underneath it.
Known by buyers. Invisible to everyone else. The product was better than anything being said about it, and nothing in the visual language earned the price on the box.
The reset had to hold inside one trading year. A repositioning that looked correct and sold through worse would have been a failure, whatever it photographed like.
Everything that did not make it.
Contact sheet, day one. Four hours before the frame that worked. The set was too clean and the shoe was reading as product.
Treatment, cut. The first version had a narrator. It explained the idea instead of showing it.
Italy. Design direction set alongside the makers, so the shoe and the story about it were decided in the same conversation.
Phone frame from set. Kept in the final edit. The polish was hiding the interesting part.
No captions. No explanation. The campaign at full size and nothing else.
The repositioning held. The brand stopped explaining its price, and the work was carried by the titles that matter without a media budget behind it.
Shortlisted at the Drapers Footwear Awards, 2025. Coverage earned through direct relationships with the titles rather than bought through an agency.
